So Where HAS Social Media and Technology Taken Us?
I attended a terrific, informative session on social media – the topic was actually about social selling, with Alice Heiman – at the recent CRS Sellabration Convention back in February in Phoenix.
The session started off with this very powerful video by rapper Prince Ea entitled “Can we Auto-Correct Humanity.” Before you read further I suggest you to watch it.
No, I don’t think it’s offensive nor will you find it so, but there is an emotional message here, a strong commentary on where technology, and in particular social media, have taken us, and how it impacts our humanity and relationships we have with others. I daresay anyone using social media at all will see some aspects of themselves in this video. It WILL make you think!!

No, it’s not a suggestion to stop using our phones, or social media, but perhaps a message to make us more aware of our usage – when we are using it, and how – when being face to face might be a better place to be.  Is it about how many likes or friends we have? Or who we are as social beings? For some it may be!
You can draw your own conclusions!!
The focus of the social selling seminar was to help us think about what we are trying to accomplish when using social media and how to do this effectively and in a meaningful manner for our business…to not be a real estate bill board but to truly provide information others want and need, and to engage with them whenever possible on topics of interest to them.
Social media may or may not be where we want to be, depending on our business model. Does it work? You bet…if done well.
Here’s the thing, though. Talking about what others want to talk about, sharing our passions, providing value, making it fun and interesting, and being authentic IS where social media becomes of value in our business online.
Social selling really is about interacting with our prospects online, not broadcasting; delighting them when they want to interact, not interrupting their daily lives with cold calls and a hard sell. With some exceptions, buyers buy from us, and sellers sell with us, not our website! It’s who we are as people that matters.
